David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust was broadly sketched as a benevolent and sexually ambivalent folk hero. Yet he wasn’t born in a vacuum, and the musical and theatrical tropes were cherry-picked from the Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Marc Bolan, dancer Lindsay Kemp, and all the darker and sexually aggressive elements of garage rock, glam rock and what was already being called punk.
