@stephen_koch snowboarding at 24,000ft on the North Face of #Everest. The face was steep and icy enough where a fall would have been lethal. Stephen was carrying two ice climbing tools to self arrest if he lost an edge. The direct North Face route on Everest starts at 20,000ft and finishes over 29,000ft. It was the middle of the monsoon season and we were the only team on the mountain when Stephen and I attempted to climb the 9,000ft route in alpine style (w/o fixed ropes, fixed camps or supplemental oxygen.) It was an all out blitz from the bottom up in a single push. We started in the middle of the night under a full moon. Avalanche conditions midway up the face forced us to make a tough decision and turn around after two months of preparation and acclimatizing on nearby peaks. Only hours after we finally got off the face, the entire slope ripped out, taking our tracks with it. Sometimes an unlucky day can turn out to be quite lucky after all. #stylecounts @thephotosociety
