Many of you know I've been working on a screenplay that is a modern day re-telling of the Hosea and Gomer story (Priest marries a prostitute. In my study of the ancient sex trade I was struck by the degree to which a woman was known by those around her to be a prostitute. It was the opposite of a Pretty Woman type scenario where she just had to decide to be different, dress less provacatively, and suddenly would no longer be a hooker. For women and girls in ancient Israel/Palestine, they were marked - tattoos, specific clothing, and lived near the gates of a city (to sleep with travelers). They were known, within their small communities, and would not be able to ever shed that reputation. It was very important to me to find a way to imbue the audience with the sense that Kate (Gomer) cannot every fully escape her history. It is important to understand how deeply her identity is rooted in abuse, poverty, and a lack of self-worth. To this end, I made her a Cutter; someone who struggles with NSSI (Non-suicidal self-injury). Sadly, this has become a common occurrence in teenagers, some studies estimating as many as 1 in 5 teenage girls in America are involved in self-mutilation and injury. For Kate, it becomes the only way she can maintain control in a completely chaotic world. I envision her scars having a simultaneously beautiful and repulsive appearance - grounding the audience in the implications, both literally and metaphorically, of a person who needs to be made whole, but cannot fully be so. #hosea
