Happy Mother's Day! ------------------------------------ I am beyond blessed to have a beautiful and caring mother who always goes above and beyond the call of duty. My mom Cindy supports me in my greatest times of need, loves me when I forget to love myself, and believes in me without judgment or skepticism. She fearlessly defends me and the LGBT movement against strangers and even members of our family and hometown community--not an easy task when you live in as conservative of a town as she does. If I'm a parent someday, I hope that I will love them as whole-heartedly as my mom has loved me and my sisters all these years. ---------------------------------------Although my mom means more to me than anyone, I do want to thank the other special women in my life who have helped shape me into the man I am today. It might be cliché, but I truly believe that “it takes a village,” and my village is populated by strong, beautiful, and compassionate women. --------------------------------------- My aunt Sandy has always loved me like her own son. I'll forever be grateful to her for helping take care of me and my sisters and for accepting me for who I am. -------------------------------------- As a child, many of my best friends’ mothers welcomed me into their homes and families with open arms. Thank you Tami Kampf, Lisa Simmer, Debbie Hawe, Terri Dotson, Eileen Brody, Ardell McDonald, and Michelle Oxford for being wonderful surrogate mothers. At school, I was lucky enough to have some very special teachers and amazing counselors. Karen Jacobson, Carrie Thiel, and Jodie Barber profoundly affected my difficult adolescence by offering advice and support whenever I needed. ------------------------------------ Today is about honoring, celebrating, and thanking all mothers for the guidance and nurturing they have given us throughout our lives. Thank you Mom, my sisters, and all the other phenomenal women that I am lucky enough to know and love.
