On August 15th, 1914, the #PanamaCanal officially opened. Over the course of a decade, it took more than 60,000 people, twenty-five million pounds of dynamite, five million cubic yards of concrete and the removal of two-hundred million cubic yards of earth to complete the project that brought San Francisco and New York nearly 8,000 miles closer to each other. Above is an excerpt from a 1926 #GE documentary about the construction of the Panama Canal. In the early 1900s, GE built the world's largest electrical installation at the canal, as well as a fleet of towing locomotives to guide ships through it. Today, the Panama Canal Authority powers its tug fleet with GE's newest marine engines, the Tier 4 series. Here's to celebrating the past 100 years of record-breaking #engineering, and looking forward to the next.
