100 years ago today: the Panama Canal officially opens. This is a photo of the Gatun Locks under construction. Before the canal, all oceangoing shipping transiting between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans had to take the arduous route around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America. It was—and still is—one of the most dangerous ocean passages in the world, with extreme winds, waters, and weather. #canal100 #panamacanal #bigships
