Emotional intelligence is key to be successful in relationships.
Allowing yourself to consider various perspectives rather than responding to the very first emotional impulse is healthy because it lets you channel your feelings into empowering or liberating emotions, which are very different from destructive ones.

Step 1. The emotion emerges. Acknowledge it. (I'm feeling happy, sad, mad...) Step 2. Examine the feeling to its origin and evaluate its substance. (What happened and why am I feeling this now?) Step 3. Execute a response based on relevance and urgency.
(How bad is it and did he/she mean to hurt me?) Being emotionally mature doesn't mean bottling up your feelings or letting emotions fester and compound until you explode or implode.
It means having a great understanding of yourself based on your past experiences, and applying that knowledge by making emotional decisions that help yourself, not hurt yourself.

Feeling all emotions is great. But reacting to all of them isn't always.

Know yourself. Love yourself.
