The Rise of Mammals
When an asteroid hit the planet some 65 million years ago, bring the dinosaurs region to an end the mammals got the evolutionary opportunity of a lifetime. With dinosaurs gone the mammals could exploit the plant resource of the planet and within a few years the the fossil records show an explosion of mammalian diversity.
The Fantastic Four
How closely related are the world’s mammals? Molecular biologist studying mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of living animals to group placental mammals with their closest kin. The result is a new grouping of four superorders. The Elephant belongs in the group Afrotheria, aardvarks and the hyraxes. What does this mean? In practical terms better and new ways to treat veterinary and human disease.
