Michelle Phillips explained that John woke her up in the middle of the night and asked her to help him with a song. She told him, "tomorrow, I need my beauty rest" and he said, "no, this is really a big song and I need you." And she said, "I'll get up and write it with you if I get 50% rights." And John agreed and so he sang the first line "All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey..." And she says he always hated her second verse but she got that 50% of the song and that's why she "wears nice jewelry."
