Photo: @stevewinterphoto Today,Oct 23rd, marks the first International Day of the Snow Leopard! Snow leopards are among the most elusive of the big cats, which makes them the least understood. There are between 4,500-7,500 left in the wild which sadly has earned them a spot on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. One of the greatest threats to snow leopards are retaliatory killings from livestock herders. Due to a decrease of wild prey in their habitats snow leopards often attack domestic livestock herds, impacting herders’ livelihoods. Herders then retaliate by killing snow leopards in hopes of preventing future attacks. To help reduce this human-animal conflict, conservationists are helping herders build predator-proof corrals for their livestock. To help fund these corrals and protect snow leopards make a donation to National Geographic's own BIG CATS INITIATIVE or The Snow Leopard Trust. Visit both www.CauseAnUproar.org and http://www.snowleopard.org/ to learn about other ways to help protect these beautiful cats. I photographed the snow leopard seen here with the help of camera traps for the @NatoGeo story on Snow Leopards "Out of the Shadows”, published in the June 2008 issue. Check out my website to see more from this story, and join me on my @NatGeo Live tour “One the Trail of Big Cats” to hear about what it took to get photos of this elusive animal. #SnowLeopard #SnowLeopardDay2014 #bigcatsforever #conservationphotography #wildcat #wildlife #bigcats #wildlifephotojournalism #bigcats #HemisNationalPark #India #NatGeo #BigCatConservation #India #WildlifePhotography #Cameratraps #pantheracats #WildlifeConservation #NatGeoLive #wildlife #BigCatInitiative #BCI #Causeanuproar
