Today I went decor hunting, which took me up to Evanston, IL. I met a truly inspiring man named Armen, who runs the exquisite Minasian Rug Company. He showed me rugs, new and old (I'm talking 1800's old) from around the world. One small rug stood out to me. You know that feeling when something almost calls your name? He told me the rug comes from a cooperative in Afghanistan, called Arzu, which means “hope” in Dari. Arzu's mission is to foster the empowerment of women in an environment where they traditionally have none. Through social entrepreneurship, they help Afghan women weavers & their families break the cycle of poverty by providing them steady income & access to education. Armen can make far more money selling antique rugs, but he imports rugs from Arzu, and speaks to his customers about their work with women, because he believes in them & loves what they do.
