This vulture, unlike most others, pulled through and survived after treatment with atropine and charcoal. Deliberate poising of vultures in Africa is widespread and having a catastrophic effect on the population. The reasons are myriad; this vulture may well have been poisoned for its brain. Witch Doctors in South Africa either take or prescribe vulture brain as it's believed it gives people power to see into the future. The vulture brains and other parts are collected by poisoning dead animals with pesticides - particularly a nematicide called Carboforan, which is lethal to all animals including humans (a friend's brother died from eating poisoned wading birds in Kenya). Vultures and other animals including eagles, jackals, lions and hyenas who eat the poisoned carcasses will die. The dead vultures are then collected, many just have their heads taken (for their brains), their bodies are left behind. Vultures are being hit so hard by poisoning in Africa that some experts don't see a future for them - some say extinction for some species could be as short as ten years. Taken on assignment for a feature on vultures due out 2015. This vulture was released back into the wild after making a full recovery.
