The evolution of traits perfected for the cold marries the penguin to its polar ecosystem. While penguins are often portrayed on land, waddling about and huddling together to keep warm, it is only when we see them in the water that we realize what they are truly specialized for. Streamlined, with flippers for propulsion - not flight, capable of reaching great depths and speeds to dive for food. Emperor penguins have even evolved to excrete micro-bubbles of air to speed up to avoid predators.
