A #copper mountain called "the richest hill on earth" once stood where this 1.5 mile wide pit of #toxic water is today in #Butte, #Montana in the United States. An #open-pit copper mine, The #BerkeleyPit is a #Superfund site I @FritzPhotos photographed for the @ナショナルジオグラフィック story titled #Wasteland published in the December edition of the magazine. When the mine was in operation groundwater was pumped from the pit. When mining ceased the pumps were shut down and the water began to fill the 1800 foot deep cavity. By 2020 the water will reach a level critical to the city and pumps will be turned on to maintain a safe level. Despite this mess there is another pit being dug right next to this one called the #ContinentalPit, it will be larger than the Berkeley.

Butte is a great place. We really enjoyed our time there. If you go, stay in the old part of the city it's still pretty original and you can feel the mining history there. I must thank two great Butte folks Tom Malloy and Joe Griffin for helping us with access.
Can you guess what that little shack on the rim of the pit was used for? What it's called? I'll post the answer later in the comments.
