Today in 1942: President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the dismantling of the WPA (Work Projects Administration), created to provide jobs during the Great Depression. Iris Bancroft was 16 when she made this plywood viola during a WPA program in her hometown of Chicago. She played the viola throughout her adult life.
