“I would not have been this hooked on black-and-white photography had I not known about Instagram,” says Akihito Nagata (@Aki) of Osaka, Japan. Over the past two years, Akihito’s photographic style has evolved significantly from daily captures of his life in color to monochrome portraits to carefully composed black-and-white street photography. “I was amazed by all the black-and-white photos I found on Instagram,” he says, “especially the architecture photos.” Akihito says that shooting and editing a good black-and-white photo is mostly intuitive, although he does have a few tricks—like experimenting with silhouettes, creating depth in the composition, and making just the right adjustments to the brightness and tone. “With black-and-white photography, you get to create a mixture of reality and fantasy,” he continues, “and that is what fascinates me the most.” Photo by @Aki
