75 years ago today, Gone With the Wind premiered in Atlanta. Then Governor Eurith Dickinson Rivers declared a three-day holiday, schools closed and politicians asked Georgians to dress in period clothing. Because of segregation, Hattie McDaniel and the other black cast members weren't invited to the premiere despite the cast and crew's protestations. McDaniel did attend the Los Angels premiere and went on to make history by winning the Oscar for best supporting actress, one of 10 Oscars the film took home that year.
