Photo by @amivitale. Children from a neighboring community spend time with "Hope", an orphaned #rhino being hand raised at the Lewa Wildife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife). None of the children had ever seen a rhino in the their life. Much needed attention has been focused on the plight of wildlife but very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars and the incredible work that is being done to strengthen them. These communities hold the key to saving Africa's great animals.
I have been in Kenya for the past month to tell these stories of the Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya) and #Lewa. They understand that preserving community cohesion is ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten their wildlife and their way of life. There are solutions and places where people are making a difference through strengthening community.
