Over the next week I would like to explore the theme of “Dusk to Dawn”. I will be sharing a different image every day on @paulnicklen taken while the sun was either on or below the horizon. This yields my absolutely favorite light for wildlife and nature photography and produces moody and dramatic scenes like this. I photographed this massive male polar bear on the sea ice near Ellesmere Island right after midnight. The sun was skimming along the horizon and would not dip below the horizon again for another four months. The fiery light illuminated his frosty breath and the -45 celsius air created the feeling I was looking for. He was sporting a fresh battle wound on his face from fighting other males for the right to breed. I want to keep the memory of bears as masters on the sea ice and not as ghosts trapped on land waiting for the autumn ice to form.
