Photo:@SteveWinterPhoto I photographed the snow leopard seen here with the help of a camera trap for the @NatGeo story "Out of the Shadows”, published in the June 2008 issue. Check out my website to see more from this story. If you're in the Tampa Bay area tomorrow night join me at the @StrazCenter to hear about what it took to get photos of this elusive animal during my @NatGeoLive talk "On the Trail of Big Cats". Snow leopards are among the most elusive of the big cats, which makes them the least understood of big cats. There are between 4,500-7,500 left in the wild which sadly has earned them a spot on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. One of the greatest threats to snow leopards are retaliatory killings from livestock herders. Due to a decrease of wild prey in their habitats snow leopards often attack domestic livestock herds, impacting herders’ livelihoods. Herders then retaliate by killing snow leopards in hopes of preventing future attacks. To help reduce this human-animal conflict, conservationists are helping herders build predator-proof corrals for their livestock. You can help fund these corrals and help protect snow leopards by making a donation to The Snow Leopard Trust or @NatGeo ‘s own BIG CATS INITIATIVE.
