Svalbard, Norway is just 600 miles from the North Pole and historically was surrounded by fast ice year round. In recent years, there has been very little or no fast ice around Svalbard during the summer months, confining bears like this mother and cubs to land where they will not be able to catch seals, their primary food source. This summer, we even discovered several young bears who had starved to death. The scientific community predicts that we could see the extinction of polar bears in a little as a hundred years.
