Happy birthday to #Kansas founding drummer #PhilEhart (far left), who turned 65 this week. “In 1972, Ehart went to England to find more challenging music, but he was treated there like an American yahoo. Disgusted, he returned home and recruited all of Kansas’ current lineup . . . They recorded a demo in a Liberal, Kansas, studio for $300 — a huge sum for a band living on a dollar a day. Ehart mailed one copy to a friend with contacts on the East Coast. Months later, the group was playing a Dodge City gig when a phone call came through from New York City: Wally Gold from Kirshner Records and wanted to hear them live. ‘It was like, we’ve been saved,’ Ehart says. ‘Somebody just threw us a rope.’” From @Rolling Stone, 1979.
