Shimoda is a small coastal town, nestled amongst hills, located near the tip of the Izu Peninsula in southern Shizuoka prefecture. Shimoda is historically significant as a port town, and, as such, was where Japan's trading and diplomatic contact with the United States, and then Russia, began, in the 1850s, ending just over two centuries of Japan's so-called isolation.
