Photograph by @paulnicklen while on assignment for @natgeo. These Narwhal images seem to have resonated with the good people following my @paulnicklen instagram page. Soon, I will continue with images of my other favorite polar species, but while we are on the topic of Narwhals, here is another of my favorites. I am still getting notes from people asking if they are real. Hopefully this picture does the trick. Yes, #unicorns of the sea really do exist. After months of flying my ultralight airplane around the Arctic with Brian Knutsen we were finally able to land on a pan of drifting pack ice and stand next to hundreds of Narwhals. We were just a few feet away from these Narwhals who were gently wielding their tusks away from one another as they desperately maneuvered for a breath of air. They were diving under the sea ice in order to feed on polar cod. The sea ice travels around in the current and the breathing hole locations are always changing. What I want people to realize is that with the disappearance of sea ice in the near future, we will also see the demise of copepods, amphipods, polar cod, seals, polar bears, bowhead whales, belugas and even Narwhals. As we continue to release carbon emissions into the atmosphere at this rate, we will never be able to reverse the effects of human induced climate change. Let's alter our behavior and our impact on this planet before we wake up one day without these fantastic and charismatic species. Please follow us on @sea_legacy and sealegacy.org as we use the power of photography and filmmaking to inspire the change necessary to protect the last great wilderness species and ecosystems.
