Shown here is Marine Sgt. Louis Lowery's photo of U.S. Marines raising an American flag for the first time atop Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945. Today is the 70th anniversary of that photo -- and another famous image from that day.
A U.S. commander thought the flag was too small to be seen at a distance, so a few hours later, five more Marines and one Navy medical corpsman carried out orders to haul a much larger flag up to the top. Another photo shoot was done, and CNN Opinion contributor Ruth Ben-Ghiat writes that this second image is the one that became iconic, representing tragedy and triumph of the war.
