With the anniversary of the Selma Alabama march in the news recently I started to think about the issue that I had covered that touched on race in America.
In 1983 while a #photography #intern at the #FortWorthStarTelegram I was assigned to cover a #KUKluxKlan protest in downtown #Dallas.
In the above photo a Klan marcher hides behind the #stars&bars during the march.
I do remember how few protesters were in the march, (around 60 as I recall), protected by 500 Police officers. Over 1000 came to protest the Klan and voice their opposition to the group.
For me it was a water shed moment in which I understood the roll of the press to show this march for what it was, a small, ignorant & raced sliver of the American population.
I was given the chance as a paid intern, on summer break from #KansasState University to cover these kinds of events. The experience gave me the chance to learn in a real world environment, I shot so many different kinds of assignments.
I fear for the college students now, who do free internships and free pictures for publications, that they are not going to be able to sustain a future in this business. After all it takes money to create the pictures that magazines and online publications use. It just costs the students to produce the work as the publications benefit. #TBT @thephotosociety @ナショナルジオグラフィック @instituteartist
