It's Mother's Day in the UK! We're celebrating with depictions of mothers throughout history.
This is a Schist figure of a matrika (mother goddess) from Tanesara, Southern Rajasthan, India from the mid-6th century AD. The goddess in Hinduism takes on many forms, some fierce and powerful, others peaceful and loving. In this sculpture she is shown as the embodiment of maternal love. This is emphasized by her gaze, which is directed towards the child at her knee.
