In the surrounding forest, these men stalk various forms of animal protein--dik-diks, duikers, monkeys and other bush game. The resulting meat is often the only source of animal-based protein available in such remote areas. Lacking suitable grazing grounds, these forest communities cannot keep cows, sheep and other animals that are often consumed by humans. Outside of bushmeat, their basic diet consists mostly of various agricultural products. Beyond community consumption, hunted animals are sold to those in the region's towns, providing a scarce source of cash-based revenue. "Hunting is how we get money to school our children and pay for things like health care," one older hunter tells me. While such communities take much of what they need from the forest, no group is without a need for cash.
