This laughing Eros is today’s ‪#FridayFigure – after all it is‪ #‎InternationalDayOfHappiness!
In ancient Greece, Eros was the boy god of love, son of Aphrodite (Roman: Venus), and equivalent to Cupid in Roman mythology. Representations of him in Greek art became increasingly younger over the centuries. By the Roman period (around 1st century BC to 3rd century AD), he is often shown as an infant.
It is not clear whether this laughing head of a child is a portrait or intended to represent Eros. Whichever is the case, the sculptor has captured infancy’s carefree naughtiness. The discoloration of the carefully worked hair may indicate the remains of a preparation for gilding.
Experience the brilliance of ancient Greek art in ‪#DefiningBeauty, opening next week!
