This morning, Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed Senate Bill 101 into law. This bigoted bill allows private businesses, individuals, and organizations to discriminate against LGBT people (or anyone else they want) on religious grounds. --------------------------------------------------- I whole heartedly feel that everyone is entitled to their personal or spiritual beliefs, but no person, no government, should have the authority to allow citizens to use their beliefs as legal grounds for discrimination against others. --------------------------------------------------- Throughout history, even not so long ago, religion was used to justify slavery, criminalize interracial marriage, and promote gender inequality. Society has come too far to allow such a close-minded, prejudiced law to take effect. --------------------------------------------------- "Today I signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, because I support the freedom of religion for every Hoosier of every faith," the Governor said in his statement. "The Constitution of the United States and the Indiana Constitution both provide strong recognition of the freedom of religion but today, many people of faith feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action. --------------------------------------------------- "This bill is not about discrimination, and if I thought it legalized discrimination in any way in Indiana, I would have vetoed it," the Governor added. --------------------------------------------------- The law does not specifically mention LGBT people or marriage equality, but I have no doubt that this will adversely affect LGBT men and women who live in Indiana. My late partner Tom was from Indiana and I know he would be deeply disappointed with, and appalled by, this giant step backwards.
