Photograph by @paulnicklen while on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック along the BC coast. What initially appears as play, was in fact coordinated hunting behavior where the dolphins entered the water together, at great speed, splitting the bait ball of herring that was just below the surface. The fact that they can be swimming along at 20mph, then leap from the water high into the air and finally enter the water, barely touching one another in this calculated and coordinated move to orchestrate a beautiful herring feeding session was mind boggling to witness. Nature always teaches me something of value. What I love about my job is that I get to experience nature both above and below the waves. I then slipped into the water to watch them work the ball of herring along with salmon and diving birds.
