Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey). Oglala Lakota Medicine man Stanley Good Voice Elk lights sage in his basement (to purify the space) on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The mask he wears is a Heyoka mask (the sacred clowns), who employ humorous speech and behavior like walking backwards and doing things in "opposites" to provoke spiritual awareness and keep balance in the community. This image is from a 2012 @ナショナルジオグラフィック cover story 7 years in the making. Though the photography for this story ended almost 3 years ago I continued to collect oral histories, drawings, and vernacular imagery from families I spent time with. I've recently created a super-limited edition book that is essentially a "museum in a box," containing all of these items, including a box of 16 vision drawings from Stanley, along with letter-pressed stories about his journey as a healer. Only 50 of these collections were made and include a print of mine and original art by the street artist @Shepard Fairey (Shepard Fairey) made from one of my National Geographic assignment photos.
