2014 Holy Fire — Eruptions of joy as candles are carried around the Tomb of Christ during the Christian Orthodox Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepluchre, Jerusalem on Holy Saturday, the day before Orthodox Easter.
Just over a year ago today I was in the Church of the Holy Sepluchre for what is known as Holy Fire while working on part III of the National Geographic story, @outofedenwalk.
The day preceding Orthodox Easter, archbishops of both Greek and Armenian Orthodox Church's enter what is believed to be the Tomb of Christ inside the Holy Sepluchre.
With unlit candles, it is believed that blue light emanating within Christ's tomb lights the candles. It also is said some candles held in hands of faithful within the church spontaneously light.
This is the photograph from this event that appeared in the December 2014 issue of National Geographic, "Blessed. Cursed. Claimed”. Also on this day, I think of my friend and preeminent Jerusalem based photographer, Garo, whom I had the privilege to work with for over a month last year. Garo helped me gain this very unique access into on what was truly one of the most unique events I’d ever witnessed.
