On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." Carl Sagan spoke these words describing an image of earth taken by Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990 from a record distance from Earth of 3.7 billion miles. In it, earth appears as a slightly lighter pixel on a very black screen.

Despite how concrete it seems, this is a fragile place. This image of @mikelibecki and @freddiewilkinson was taken in Antarctica on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Antarctica is the largest pristine wilderness left on the planet...and it's largely because we can't effectively sustain our existence there. EARTH DAY is a celebration of our home...lets do our best to take care of our little planet floating out in space. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative
