Adelaida Cuellar's family migrated from Mexico to Texas in the 1890s. Adelaida sold her handmade tamales at the county fair. In 1928, she opened a restaurant, which her family expanded in the 1950s into the El Chico Tex-Mex restaurant chain. By the 1990s, the Cuellars owned more than 100 El Chico restaurants.
In the 1960s, dresses like this one were worn during special celebrations at El Chico restaurants. It features the colors and Aztec eagle design of the Mexican national flag. Gift of John Cuellar.
