Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst getting arrested. Born on 15 July 1858, Emmeline founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903 and initiated a series of political interventions, including smashing windows, assaulting police officers and even arson. The vote was extended to women over 30 (if they or their husbands occupied premises of a certain value) in 1918, and then to all women over 21 in 1928.
Unfortunately Emmeline did not live to see the change her campaign helped to generate. She died a few weeks before legislation was changed, aged 69, on 14 June 1928. "We have to free half of the human race, the women, so that they can help save the rest of the human race". Ladies, on UK polling day, give it up for Emmeline Pankhurst. Kx
