35 years ago today Mt. St. Helens blew. It is one of those dates that is burned in my memory. I remember where I was and what I was doing. I remember watching the huge question mark-shaped cloud slowly heading east and thinking, "Storm's coming." Then the ash started to fall. So fine, and heavy. The sulfur smell was overpowering and surprising. Everyone hunkered inside and watched it pile up. Many a roof would cave in from the weight. Enterprising boys like me made a little change climbing up and sweeping them clean for those unwilling. For weeks after, cars were still sending up great rooster tails of dust at the slowest speeds. You can still see the line of ash in the ground when you dig a deep hole. 57 dead. Over $1 billion in property damage, thousands of game animals died. Thousands of acres of timber downed.
