The lake of the moon at Nevado de Toluca , Mexico

Of the 18 archeological sites on the mountain Nevado de Toluca the most significant is the lake of the moon. Divers have found numerous offerings at the bottom of the lake. Ceramics, obsidian blades and vast amounts of copal. Pre Hispanic cultures worshiped at the lake setting burning copal floating on the lake. Did it mimic the smoking of a volcano?
