Recently high atop a mountain, alone and lost in the topography, I came upon a friend of far grander scale. It was late in the afternoon when the sun presents elongated shapes of the world around us. As sure as my breath, to the left was my traveling companion, standing next to a majestic tree of elder age. I took a photograph with my Canon 5D Mark III, realizing the often rarity of coming across anyone in such a remote area — we were simply there.

Pre-Selfie Era, they were called Self Portraits. We used mirrors or a reflection of any kind. My preference was always shadows. More metrical in visual verse, shadows reveal the subtext of our world, of our selves…and in this case, my vest blowing in the steady wind.

When working (photography never feels more like cavorting), I dance alone. Hours of quiet gait in the act of falling, catching oneself with every step, guided by nothing more than wonder, embracing even something so simple as a shadow.
