Ancient ruins in the historic desert city of #Palmyra in Syria. The ruins — photographed here by @sergeyponomarev in March 2014 — are a symbol of the country’s heritage, embraced by both supporters and opponents of President Bashar al-Assad. Islamic State militants swept into Palmyra, a city of 50,000, on Wednesday, and by the evening they were in control of it. International antiquities officials have said it would be catastrophic if the #ruins, a @unesco #worldheritage site at the crossroads of ancient Greek, Roman, Persian and Islamic cultures, were to be destroyed or damaged.
