Today is World Turtle Day! We're shellebrating with Geochelone atlas, a tortoise that lived during the Late Pliocene, about 2 million years ago. The true tortoises are highly terrestrial turtles with domed shells and completely retractive heads, limbs, and tails. They live on all continents except Australia and and Antarctica, and are the most recent of the turtle groups to evolve. Most tortoises are slow-moving plant-eaters, and rely on their armor for protection. For reasons that are still unknown, some tortoise species reached large sizes, as with this Geochelone fossil, collected in India.
