Esther Gathaku considers herself rich in land, food, trees and love- thanks to the help of TIST: an organization that fosters the development of small tree-planting and agriculture groups to combat deforestation and famine in countries like Kenya. TIST has provided Esther with the income her and her husband to support their son, adopted from parents killed by HIV. Members of TIST maintain a group nursery which rotates each year. The location and leadership also switches, keeping each member mindful of the fact that they also will also need cooperation from the group to lead their team.
TIST has been in operation since 1999 and has more than 54,719 members in Kenya alone, where members have fostered the growth and care of more than six million trees.
