Under all-seeing eyes on a billboard in a Beijing rail station, Chinese police hunt for North Koreans attempting to escape cross-country by train. In late 2007, while I was on the “Escape from North Korea” assignment for National Geographic, the top editor did promise, if it was within his power, to bail me out if I ran into problems with authorities in various countries. Experience tells me that if I have to call my editor to get me out of prison of some sort, that simply means I have no pictures—and that’s downright unprofessional! So I made all the necessary preparations and was able to avoid the attention that a European-looking photographer is likely to attract. I was led to believe that I should never fly direct from Seoul to Yanji in northeastern China, or I would be targeted by Chinese public security upon arrival. So I traveled like a backpacker from Beijing all the way to wintry, bone-chilling Yanji to make sure there was no tail behind me—but also knowing there were countless surveillance cameras along the way. And I certainly did not have an exit plan. Where was I going to run—dive into the Sea of Japan or trek to Mongolia or surrender to North Korea? Run?
