These flowers were originally introduced into the country in the mid 1940's in an effort to combat erosion on volcanic soils from centuries of sheep grazing. Although Lupin does stimulate the soil it's growing at a rapid rate, spreading through the fields and effecting native plants. It's a classic dilemma that happens when a non-native plant is introduced into an ecosystem it can thrive in. Efforts are being made to slow this spread down, but without a natural check point from nature these flowers continue to spread with colorful ease.
