In Iran there is always more to life than meets the naked eye. Its sophisticated society thrives on complexities and contradictions. There are layers to everything, no matter whether it is carpets, food, or politics.
Iran’s capital, Tehran, looks like many other sprawling world cities with scores of anonymous high-rises. But many buildings that face busy thoroughfares are adorned with a unique array of public art that ranges from political propaganda to outrageous surrealist murals.
One day while I was there on assignment for National Geographic, I noticed a woman walking past a wall that featured both an optical illusion created by a painter and the stern faces of Ayatollah Khomeini and his successor, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. To me this image captures the juxtaposition of one person's liberal imagination with its cultural counterweight.

On this historic day of the nuclear accord between Iran and the rest of the world, I want to look beyond the political stereotypes that divide us and salute the many friends I made in Iran who helped me understand the richness of their culture.
