I recently received this note..
“As a French veterinarian, I am very shocked that declawing is still allowed in the USA. I always refused to declaw cats even when it was not forbidden in France. Of course declawing is an amputation. Of course it is awfully painful! Of course it must be forbidden and vets must not declaw cats. Veterinarians are here to take care of animals, not to mutilate them! And all that the AVMA is talking about is new methods for declawing? Shocking, really.”
She is referring to how the @AVMAvets taught a workshop at their recent convention on how to use a lasers to declaw cats for profit, how they didn’t address the fact that their “last resort” declawing policy isn’t working and how declawing is being performed mostly as a first option and for the wefare of furniture, and how they could have taught a workshop on new and innovative solutions to scratching issues. Veterinarians took an oath and promised to use their knowledge and skills for “the protection of animal health and welfare and the prevention and relief of animal suffering.”
Declawing goes 100% against this oath. Please talk to your own veterinarian and ask them to stop. Let’s try to find humane vets who don’t declaw cats and take our business to them. Here’s a list and let’s find more. www.Declaw.com
This will send a powerful message and maybe finally they will stop performing these mutilating surgeries. (And yes, dogs sometimes are declawed because their owners don’t like the sound of their nails on the floor)
