“It takes a lot of attention to detail and focus to raise a short-eared elephant shrew baby! Infant mortality rate is high when a baby is left with mom, but we’ve had a 100 percent survival rate hand-raising. They’re really small at birth—less than 10 grams. Not only are they delicate, but each baby has its preferences. Some like to be held vertically when feeding, some like to be held firmly or loosely. We feed them 3-4 times a day, monitoring input and output, and weighing the baby. They eat one-third of their body weight a day! Everyone on the Small Mammal House team played a role raising two babies this year. The eldest was shipped to Knoxville Zoo and will be paired for breeding soon. How awesome is that?!” – Steve Sarro, Small Mammal House. #NZKW2015 #WeSaveSpecies
