Veterinarians and cat owners who declaw, please fix your moral compass. In 1952, a veterinarian named Andrew Grant Misener,who had a very twisted and evil mentality, came up with a very barbaric, inhumane, and cruel idea that he could stop a natural behavior in cats with a 11 minute procedure of amputating cat’s toe bones and claws with a guillotine blade. He promoted it to his veterinary colleagues as a cure all for the claws on furniture and curtains issue. The @avmavets said in his 2001 obituary, "Dr Misener developed a humane procedure to declaw cats." ? Sadly most of the vets in North America jumped on board. They marketed it as an easy and quick way to keep their cat clients who have cat scratching issues happy, touted it like it is a little bit more than a manicure and cats won’t even know they are missing an important part of their body that is so necessary for their health and well being, and also it would be a number one money maker for their veterinary clinics. Win win win for the veterinarians. And sadly it caught on in North America. And cats everywhere lost big time. It will always be the most ugly and appalling thing that goes 100% against the healing promise that veterinary doctors said they would uphold when they took that oath. An unethical mindset that has completely gone away from what veterinary medicine is all about- healing. Lost in the weak excuses like “it keeps a cat in a home, that it is better than euthanizing a cat, and that it helps the human-animal bond.” All a great marketing campaign to make you believe it is ok.
