Today is World Lung Cancer Day. I continue to share my story and use my voice because of the loss I experienced. I lost my grandmother, Doris Dooyema to lung cancer. She was a light in this world and a special soul. She was taken too soon and there is a hole in my heart. It wasn't until she was sick though that I learned the facts about lung cancer. I learned lung cancer is the number one killer of women in America and the death rate has doubled in the last few decades. I learned there is no early detection methods and it can happen to anyone, even non smokers, like my Granny. Also, every year Lung Cancer claims more lives than breast, colon and prostate combined. I was stunned and upset at the facts we faced and with and my own ignorance and complacency to such a huge epidemic. I vowed to move forward each day carrying on her legacy by raising awareness and funds for @lungforce!
I reflect on my grandmother's strength often as I move forward in my life. I'm not sure how forever will feel... I'm not sure how to heal. BUT In her absence I have been given an opportunity and a voice. The opportunity to make others aware of Lung cancer. The opportunity to fight alongside those who are fighting for themselves. The opportunity to evoke change. A voice to echo My grandmothers desire to inspire & educate. A voice to honor the lives of the voiceless. And the honor to let those who are on the frontlines of this fight know, they are not alone. My grandmother showed me every day was a gift and each day I want to do more for this cause. I hope that through my voice her journey can inspire you to #shareyourvoice! Let's unite to fight for this cause EVERYDAY #lungforce #DD #worldlungcancerday
