Along the western bank of the #Danube — and about halfway between Zagreb, Croatia and Belgrade, Serbia — there rests a three-square-mile teardrop of no man’s land. Local residents call the tiny region Gornja Siga. Its mere existence as a land unburdened by deed or ruler is cause for celebration for some. After all, there are few things more uplifting than the promise that we might start over, that we might live in the early days of a better nation. That’s why one man took it upon himself earlier this year to travel to the tiny teardrop of land and, in broad daylight, plant a new flag in the soil. Vit Jedlicka, a 31-year-old Czech politician, hopes to found a libertarian paradise in Gornja Siga. He calls it Liberland. Antonin Kratochvil of @viiphoto photographed Liberland — the piece of land to the right of the island pictured here — while on assignment for #NYTMag.
